The Chief Executive Officer for Tourism Fiji, Mr Josefa Tuamoto and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific, Professor Rajesh Chandra on behalf of the Faculty of Business and Economics signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 20 July, 2010 at the Vice-Chancellory Board Room, USP.
This partnership agreement hopes to establish a relationship that will benefit both the tourism Industry as well as Tourism education in the region as a whole.
In his opening address, Vice-Chancellor Professor Chandra stated that in order to have a long term comparative advantage within the Tourism Industry, we need to ensure that we first train high quality human resource. He added, "It is very important that we have good links with industries given that it is a vital element of the strategic plan".
Professor Chandra said, "This is an exciting and entirely logical development that a premiere provider of higher education comes together in partnership with a premiere Tourism organisation to confirm that the potential of the MOU will be fully recognised".
Responding to the Vice-Chancellor's remarks, Mr Tuamoto said that it was an exciting occasion for Tourism Fiji since it would be the first time that they signed an MOU with USP. He welcomed this perception stating that in order to improve links, there has to be certain studies within the university to help boost Tourism capacity.
Major stakeholders in the region's development need to work together, to try and ensure optimal results from the implementation of tourism as a development tool.
