HIGH COURT PRE-TRIAL FOR ELECTION PETITIONS ON THURSDAY

Pre-trial conference on the 18 election petitions before the High Court will be held this Thursday.

The High Court has confirmed there will be discussions between it's officials and lawyers for the petitioners to ensure the matters are ready for trial.

The 18 election petitions against the electoral Commission and current members of Parliament now before the court are the highest ever lodged.

Former Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua, Opposition leader Steve Abana , and member for Small Malaita Rick Hou are among those facing petitions.

Malaita Island

Malaita Island is an island having a rich culture and lying in the north of Guadalcanal in Solomon Islands. The Malaita Island has a large 'bush people' population as well as artificial islands built by inhabitants if the west coast around Langa Langa Lagoon. These artificial islands are the most important sightseeing attractions of Malaita Island and have made the Malaita Island in Solomon Islands a hotshot tourist destination. The transportation system in Malaita Island has become much more advanced when the new Solomon Airlines services started connecting Honiara to the northern atoll of Ontong Java. There are various things worth watching in Malaita Island but the custom of the Malaita Island especially of the Kwaio people is something that will really interest you. This custom is the worshipping of shark as one of the prime deities. This is because fishing is the main profession of these people and they want to have themselves safeguarded from the sharks. The artificial islands of Malaita Island are built at the Langa Langa and Lau lagoons. These islands have their drinking water supply from the rainwater or it is carried from the mainland. These artificial islands are home to the 'shark callers'- people who practice the tradition of calling out to the sharks, and Laulasi which are 'haunted houses' easily identifiable because of their high roofs. Know the shark callers and see them in action in front of the sea. Another island that is worth visiting is Ferasubua which is located at the eastern tip of the Lau Lagoon. It is said to be built by a warrior called Marukua from the Walo tribe of the Morodo. Lilisiana is another artificial island which is famous for its golden sand beaches and the industry of making currency by using shell. There are various cultural villages such as Aofia, Mae'aena, Anoano, Alite, Mana'afe, Aumea and Uru. These villages are worth visiting because here you can find the indigenous people of Malaita Island and get to know their various customs. The Busu cultural village is also worth visiting site. The main administrative center of Malaita Island that is Auki is another worth visiting site and most scenic among the towns of Solomon Islands.

Malaita - History and Cultural Relations

Malaita was largely avoided in the early whaling and trading period (pre-1860) because of its inhospitable coastline and inhabitants. About 1870, Malaitans began to be kidnapped (and were later indentured) in the labor trade to Queensland, Fiji, Samoa, and New Caledonia plantations, a process notable for violent confrontations and heavy loss of life. Mission enclaves were established at the turn of the century. Pacification of Malaita began in 1909 but was not completed until 1927, after the assassination of a district officer by Kwaio warriors. Malaita was mostly spared the direct ravages of World War II, but laborers working with American troops were central in a postwar anticolonial resistance movement, Maasina ("Marching") Rule, focused on recognition of customary law and the codification of custom, indigenous representation in the process of administration, improved pay, dignity, and working conditions, and communal reorganization along military lines. The Solomon Islands gained Independence in 1978, and today Malaitans play many important roles in national life.
