Colourful tributes and speeches flowed from Members of Parliament today in appreciation of the work and contribution of former Speaker of Parliament, Sir Peter Kenilorea.
Sir Peter Kenilorea was elected Speaker of National Parliament in December 2001 - a post he held until the election of Sir Allan Kemakeza as the new Parliament Speaker this month.
Ahead of the motion, East Choiseul M-P Manasseh Sogavare tabled an amendment that the words "and for his outstanding contribution to nation-building and the advancement of democracy and good governance in Solomon Islands" be added to the end of the motion.
Following the amendment, members of parliament began a flow of tributes and well wishes to the two-term Parliamentary Speaker and founder of the Solomon Islands constitution.
In moving the motion, Prime Minister Danny Phillip said Solomon Islands has today witnessed the retirement of one of the most colourful and senior decorated statesman of this country.
Prime Minister Phillip described Sir Peter's life as colourful and exceptional with a long list of honours' bestowed upon him.
He described Sir Peter as the 'Modern Areka Araha' who, after more than forty years of service in teaching, administration, politics and as a senior statesman, has retired with flying colours.
He also said that current M-P's owe their victory of the 2010 General Elections to Sir Peter, who had also served as the Chairman to the Electoral Commission during his term as Speaker.
