SOLOMON ISLANDS WILL HAVE NEW SPEAKER TODAY

Solomon Islands will have a new Speaker of Parliament today.

Four candidates have been nominated for today's Speaker to National Parliament elections.

The nominees are: former Temotu-Nende MP, Patteson Oti, former Simbo-Rannonga MP Francis Billy Hilly, former Savo-Russells M-P and former Prime Minister Sir Allan Kemakeza and former Central Kwara'ae M-P and former Deputy Prime Minister, Fred Fono.

Clerk to Parliament, Taeasi Sanga confirmed the nominations and their nominees to yesterday evening.

The Clerk's Office has also received nominations for the Deputy Speaker elections which will follow straight after the Speaker's elections.

Mrs Sanga says the Parliament Office had received three nominations but one was disqualified on grounds that the nominated candidate did not meet constitutional requirements.
