Some children were used by parents as beggars to beg, an International Labor Organization survey conducted in Fiji on Child Labor revealed.
According to the report, survey participants say they see child sex workers at night while another respondent added seeing most young children in a particular Suva settlement involved in scrap metal (mainly copper and aluminum) business.
The survey also revealed that boys aged 13 to 17 were also used as labor to harvest sugar cane. It continued that they gave up returning to school because they miss out on a host of academic curriculum.
What started out as a school holiday's job turns out to be a usual routine for them, the report stated.
It furthers that the scrap metal collection is fast becoming a large scale activity luring an increasing number of street children and children from informal settlements.
