NOT MANY WILL DO THIS
Pictured is Jerry Maiki Tengemoana who posted this under his personal page in protest against some bauxite mining initiatives that are in the closest steps to be established as operations on his Ancestors, Great Grandfather and Grandfather's land.
His home Island was earmarked by certain so-called landowners including their local authority for mining, involving a number of Foreign Mining Companies that are currently battling over who will get the rights to do so. This has however attracted a lot of criticisms from members of his island, but from observations, their cries seemed to be sounding on deaf ears or perhaps ignorant authorities.
For me as an Environment and Climate Change advocator, I too stand with Jerry to say no to this establishment as it will only destroy:
1. the local environment and its natural habitat
2. the soil in which the people rely on for their daily gardening and crop planting.
3. wastes will certainly be involved in such an operation and for Jerry's Island which has one of the World Heritage site, threats are now being paused on it, however, if these wastes are not going to be dumped there, it will be on land, but if not on land, than no where else but in the ocean, which will surely affect what and where people rely on heavily for daily survival.
Jerry's bold stand, in the Solomon context is seen to be a small and simple protest, but already has a strong message to members of his province and the country as a whole.
Jerry is also the current CEO for the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
