North Malaita MP Jimmy Lusibaea freed

Former MEF commander and MP for North Malaita Constituency Jimmy Lusibaea was released and become free man on Friday 15th January 2011 at about 2pm in the afternoon. The MP was jailed in relation to assaulting a police officer while on duty and badly wounded an injured person. This event occured in september 2000 at the Central National Referral Hospital. The case was takem to court after 10 years and Jimmy Lusibaea received his jail term of 2 years and 9 months with another co-accuss Patterson Saeni who received his jail term of 3 years.
However A sub-group of the North Malaita Demonstration Committee had written to the Governor General last Thursday (last 2 weeks) with a request that Sir Frank grant a constitutional pardon to their jailed North Malaita MP, Jimmy Lusibaea. The Governor General then response in a letter to the North Malaita Demonstration Committee on last Friday (last 2 weeks) stated that while he did have the power to grant constitutional pardons, this power can only be exercised upon recommendation by the Prerogative Mercy Committee. The sub-committee quoted the Amnesty Act of 2000 and the Constitution Amendment Act of 2001 saying that their jailed Member of Parliament qualifies for the amnesty or immunity under these laws.
And on Friday last week it surprise many people as they heard that jailed North Malaita MP was freed. With that, few people question the released of Lusibaea including the acting leader of opposition Mathew Wale.
