Suva. HE stands slightly shorter than his seated younger brother at the height of about a three-year old.
He feels trapped in a little boy's body, but it doesn't stop the 17-year-old Sharvesh Nishar from living a normal life.
This small man of Labasa's embracing approach to life makes him a giant among many, and has earned him well deserved respect. Sharvesh, who walks on his knees after being born with a deformity, has a voice whose melody has charmed listeners and brought calm to troubled hearts.
"I may be very short for my age but I have enjoyed life. Everyday I always thank God for my family, friends and especially my life," he said.
Bima, his dad, said Sharvesh, who is the third child of four siblings, was born with deformed limbs and joints.
"When he was born, I knew something was wrong. The size of his legs and arms were not normal, they were not the size of a baby," he said. "As he grew older, the abnormal growth became obvious." It has meant regular hospital visits.
"He needs to take medication to help with digestion because his body is too small to cater for his internal organs which have grown. The medication helps him digest food," Mr Bima said.
Sharvesh attended school from Class One to Class Seven at Valebasoga outside Labasa. His father and brother, Shewin Shanil, 14, would carry him to school and back home every day. However, he was forced to drop out because of some difficulties he faced.
Nevertheless, Sharvesh continues to educate himself by reading whatever books he can access.
"I read books everyday while at home (but) I miss my friends a lot," he said. "While at home in the day, I sometimes help out with the little house work otherwise I just sing songs to God and thank him for another day," enthused Sharvesh with a wide smile.
He has a love for gospel songs because of its soothing messages of love and peace, and that nothing is impossible.
Last weekend at the Saint Mary's Hostel fundraising drive in Labasa Town, Sharvesh showed off his singing skills and stole the show as he thoroughly entertained everyone.
